Here’s a Health

Henry Purcell wrote this English Drinking Song in the late 17th century. At the end of the song Purcell mentions Roger Hewett, an unknown historical figure. Perhaps he wrote this song for one of his “ruddy” friends?

Here’s a health, a health,
Pray let it pass about.
A health that ne’er shall cease
Till our wine is out.

Therefore drink away
And never let it stand,
But ply it closely round
From hand to hand,

And eagerly and bravely
With courage thus persue it,
For ’tis a health, a health
To honest ruddy Roger Hewett.
