This English Drinking Song brings the two famous themes together: liquor and love. In this 17th century composition John Eccles asked “Why search for love when there is drink?” With love “there is nothing in it,” he says, but drink (bumper) will always make you happy!

Confusion to the pow’r of Cupid;
Brisk wine ne’er made a mortal stupid;
Drink, while sober sots look pale,
Condemn’d to claps and soggy ale.
A pox of love, there nothing in it,
A bumper gives the happy minute.
